What is a Meta Keyword?
A meta keywords tag is supposed to be a to the point list of the most important themes of your page. The html version of the meta keywords tag will look something like this.
<meta name="keywords" content="words, sentences, directly, relating, to your page, separated, by, commas.">
Ok so what do they do?
Meta keywords are used to identify what is on your specific page to search
engines. While not as influential as they once where on page ranking, it is
important to pick 10-15 words that you
think would accurately represent your page to your consumers. Always put the most relevant at the beginning
of your list and be sure not to repeat any words or sayings.
What is a Meta Title:
The meta title is an HTML code which is seen at the top left
hand corner of the browser window. This is important to search engine ranking
and also selection by the web users. It
is one of the first things that a search engine is going to look for. If you have a concise and attention grabbing
meta title that really sums up your site's topic, your site will more readily
be clicked and favored by these sources.
How to Create an Effective Meta Title:
One thing you need to make sure is that the Meta Title be
typed with the first letter of every word capitalized. This is called title
case, and you don’t need to capitalize the smaller words like as, if, a etc…
You also want to make your Meta Title something that stands out from everyone
else. If you are an electronics store selling dishwashers, instead of just
saying ‘dishwashers’ you may want to try something like “Gigantic Selection of
Dishwashers” With that being said you
should always include one of your main meta keywords in the meta title. This is also what people also see on the
search engine page so it should be attractive to web users. It is important that EACH of your pages has a
different meta title, do to the fact you are probably offering different
products on each page. Also, keep an eye
on the length of the tite, Google will crop them after 66 character and Yahoo
at 120. So a good rule of thumb is to use the first 66 characters as a primary
title, and the remainder for any elaborations that may be beneficial with
Yahoo’s larger character allotment.
What is a Meta Description:
The meta description tag is designed to provide a brief description of your site which can be used by search engines or directories. The meta description tag looks something link this:
<meta name="description" content="Brief description of the contents of your page.">
How to create an effective Meta Description:
Differentiate the descriptions for different pages. Using identical or similar descriptions on every page of a site isn't very helpful when individual pages appear in the web results.
